The water wheels dating from c 1800 are a feature of The Priest House on the River, although there was a mill on the site, mentioned in the 1086 Doomsday Book, when it was valued at Ten Shillings and One Penny Medieval in origin, the mills on this site were at first used for corn milling and fulling removing grease from wool. Paper mills were in existence by 1680 and later uses include plaster production, log sawing and button making. The mills were rebuilt by Lord Hastings in grand Gothic style c1800 but suffered much fire damaged in 1864 and 1927.
